No, we do understand Bangkok's not actually in China. But such is our commitment to all things Ultimate...

Listed alphabetically:

Eddie Adisak: 9TH Bangkok Hat Tournament, 2009

We swear, after browsing these Facebook albums, that Bangkok must have put on the greatest Ultimate party in the history of Ultimate parties. And that's saying something. But don't take our word for it... keep browsing.

Mary Carlson: Mary has, true to style, posted six albums devoted to this event: here (Friday: Temples Bar, Soi 11), here (Saturday morning: Ror Neung Phan Neung Field, Army Base), here (Saturday afternoon -- apparently Bangkok served really delicious food on the fields), here (party), here (Sunday) and here (Sunday evening). Instead of picking a picture from each, we'd just like to show you Mary's homemade costume for the Timewarp 3009 party:

That's right, a forklift.

(Or is it? Hint: this next picture.)

what you missed out on in bangkok:

you missed out on yj getting so drunk at the fields on saturday afternoon (yes, saturday) that she tried to insert herself into several couples and get a three way make out session going. all this while games were still being played. the closest she got was with kristin and grant from hong kong.

you missed out on the year 3009 costume party, the highlights of which included a drag queen musical dance number, mary carlson from shanghai dressed in the fork lift like machine ripley used to kill the alien queen at the end of aliens, and steiner dressed in a clown wig and vote for hugo chavez t-shirt, pissing roberto off so much they got into a fist fight, which was eventually ended when raven from manila slapped them both across the face.

you missed out on the best field food betsy has ever had in a tournament, ever.

you missed out on sam berry's little brother trying his best to intentionally throw a game in the b-pool quarters, drawing the ire of the rest of his teammates who actually wanted to win.

you missed out on so much fun, you are going to have to live with the indignity of not going to the cheapest, easiest to get to, most partyin' tournament that side of hk for another full year.

Editor's note: Thanks, Betsy! We appreciate you.

Will memories of this tourney never die? (Found these on my computer today and figured I'd share. Why not, right?)

Congratulations to the tourney organizers of Bangkok's 9th Annual Hat Tournament, themed Timewarp 3009. We'll have pictures and maybe some words up in the coming days, but for now check out Bangkok Ultimate's awesome website -- and we do mean awesome. I excel in both content and deliverance so let's put on our classics and we'll have a little dance shall we? Yeah British electronica!

The 2008 tournament album (Flickr) is here. Also pretty amazing.

In the rosy afterglow of Kunming's recent hat tourney, Ningbo is announcing one of its own: March 27-28 (that's Friday-Saturday) at the University of Nottingham in Ningbo, China.

For 200 RMB (or less, says the tourney invite), you get:

  • Free food and water on the fields, free dinners, tons of free beer
  • Two free drinks at two parties
  • A tourney disc, jersey and bottle

Again, all that is for 200 RMB, or less than 29 USD. The disc itself is probably worth a third of that.

It's official: the much-anticipated Jeju tournament -- among the best in Asia -- will be held on April 18-19.

Jeju is Korea's largest island, off the southwest coast. You can see it if you squint in the above map.

No offense to Boracay and any of the other Philippines touranments, but if there's one resort island you should go to on the Asia Ultimate circuit, this is probably the place. Hotel/food/fields/transportation/booze paid for in ful. We'll ruin the suspense and tell you right now the booze is soju -- lots and lots of it.

If you don't mind all the honeymooners and half-naked (fully naked?) beachgoers, you just may set your eyes upon this glory:

The Ultimate isn't bad, either. Rumor has it that this year the fields are the same ones used by Korea's national soccer team for World Cup training.

The Berry brothers and Ivan and the rest of the Kunming Ultimate Frisbee community deserve a big pat on the back for organizing a fantastic hat tournament this past weekend, which is sure to draw more and more participants in the coming years.

Not that the turnout was lacking this year: about 50 players -- comprising three hat teams plus Ningbo -- showed up for the two-day event, many flying in -- and not cheaply -- from Shanghai and Beijing. Not one of them will say the trip wasn't worth it. Blue skies and warm weather, two parties, two days of disc, and more Dali beer than anyone -- even a horde of alcohol-guzzling Frisbee players -- could consume... what more could one ask for?

The tourney was won by Team 2, a.ka. Sponge Beer Blue Pants. It beat Team 3, Frisbee-Porn-Dot-Com, 15-10 in the finals. Team 1, After the Game, defeated Ningbo in the consolation bracket.

Jon Greenberg of Shanghai (Team 2) and Sandy Wang of Beijing (Team 3) were selected the tourney's most valuable players.

Spirit awards were given to (from left to right in the photo below) Sandi Sharma, Jacob Rivkin, Ivan Xu, Logan, Ningbo player (name TK), Jeff Orcutt and Erin.

Yes, folks had fun.

See you next year, Kunming.
